Do you remember the joy of coloring books from your childhood? The simple pleasure of bringing black-and-white drawings to life with your imagination? We're excited to invite you to the Coloring Book Game Contest, where you can recreate that magic with your own creative game designs!

The challenge is simple: design a game that fits within a coloring book setting. Imagine a game where every turn, players get to enhance their gameplay and immersion by coloring parts of the game, making each session a unique and colorful experience.

Your mission is to create a game that’s both engaging and interactive, with coloring as a core element. Consider how coloring can influence game outcomes, add strategic depth, or simply increase the fun factor.

This contest is more than just creating a game; it's about crafting an experience that captures the creative and playful spirit of coloring books. We're eager to see how you bring your innovative ideas to life, turning the simple act of coloring into a key part of your game design.

So, unleash your creativity! Let's see who can design the most engaging and colorful game. Get ready to make your mark and bring your game to life with every stroke of color.

Example games that use coloring as a main mechanic:

The contest will be judged TGC community curators Chris Rossetti (Rampage Games), Chris Romansky (Sporktopia Games) and Dustin Hendrickson (Thunk Board Games). Every entry submitted will have the option to opt in to the final version of the TGC Coloring Book Collection. It is our intention to launch a crowdsale after the contest.

Contest start date: {{wing.format_datetime(contest.properties.date_created)}}

  • Design a “Coloring Book” game.
  • Your game must use and only use these two page templates for the Jumbo Coil Book. (All art under the page number box will be covered)
  • All design elements must be in black and white with an emphasis on the players coloring in your game. Extra consideration will be given to entries that incorporate coloring into their game’s mechanics.
  • You may not use cards, mats, boards, etc – only the components listed below and the two Jumbo Coil Book pages.
  • You may use any, all or none of the components included in this coloring book:
    • 1-D4, Black
    • 1-D6, 16mm, Black
    • 1-D8, Black
    • 1-D10, Black
    • 1-D10x10, Black
    • 1-D12, Black
    • 1-D20, Black
    • 8 Meeples (1 Meeple, Wood, White; 1 Meeple, Wood, Black; 1 Meeple, Wood, Red; 1 Meeple, Wood, Orange, 1 Meeple, Wood, Yellow; 1 Meeple, Wood, Green; 1 Meeple, Wood, Blue; 1 Meeple, Wood, Purple)
    • 24 Cubes (4 Cube, 10mm, Red; 4 Cube, 10mm, Orange;4 Cube, 10mm, Yellow;4 Cube, 10mm, Green;4 Cube, 10mm, Blue;4 Cube, 10mm, Purple)
    • Parts Bag, Small, Black
  • Your game DOES NOT require a box.
  • Your game should play from set up to finish in 60 minutes or less. Players usually complain more about games being too long than being too short.
  • NO CLONES! We don’t want to see an old game re-skinned or re-themed, whether it’s a published game or not. Try something new!
  • You have free reign to use any theme and mechanics you like.
  • Though not explicitly required, a 2-minute overview video is highly encouraged.
  • All artwork must be your own, commissioned by you, licensed to you, or in the public domain. Be sure to attribute your images when required.
  • Full rules must be included. You can provide links to other sources, but players need to be able to learn how to play your game just by reading the rules that come in the book.
  • A PDF document of your two page spread must be downloadable from your game's shop page. This includes game rules and board, as your design requires.
  • The game must be publish-ready (as it relates to our shop, not as it relates to being finished). This means it has a logo, backdrop, shop ad, action shots, description, and cool factors. It must also have all images proofed.
  • Include a physical copy of the pages as a Jumbo Coil Book as part of your game. You will only have the two pages available for your game and the minimum Jumbo Coil Book size is 4 pages. You may either add a cover and back page to the book or simply make the book be a two-sided copy of your game by adding each page twice. Remember that pages 1 and 4 will be open to each other and pages 2 and 3 will be open to each other, so plan accordingly when you upload images.
  • This must be a new game created for this contest. It cannot have existed on TGC prior to the start of the contest.
  • All entries must be submitted through TGC's game editor (by clicking on the "Contests" button) no later than September 2, 2024 at 7pm US Central Time.
  • Games and their shop page should not be changed after the contest deadline, until the finalists have been announced.
  • Contestants may submit multiple entries to this contest. Each entry will be judged separately.

You retain all rights to your game, and are welcome to sell it in The Game Crafter shop during and after the contest, regardless of the outcome of the contest. Your game does not have to be available for sale to enter the contest.

The community voting process will be used to determine 20 semi-finalists.

The TGC Curator Team will choose 3 to 7 finalists based on the semi-finalist scoring rubric. It is the intention of the TGC Curator team to score only the semi-finalists, but we will review all games if possible. Although unlikely, it is possible that a non-semifinalist could be chosen as a finalist. All finalists will be played and judged by the TGC curator team based on finalist scoring rubric to select one winner.
