Sanity Test for Button Bashers Turbo

70/100
Final Score
Basic premise is poorly explained - players reading the full rule set with cards in hand will be OK.

Rules 57/80

Structure 7/9

A few sections should be reorganized, as noted in Component Pictures, Setup, and Game Play section. Clarifications and Glossary sections are called for in the Table of Contents but are not present.

Requirements 3/3

Introduction 2/3

Good, but require that I understand some sort of computer game tournament is the subject - I think. Given the art, this shouldn't bother the target demographic.

Overview 1/3

I'm choosing or building a character, then using cards to simulate an old-fashioned video slug-fest, I think - I'll find out when I get further in the rules, but a brief summary noting the basic actions of the game is helpful for players not committed to playing the game.

Component List 4/5

Component Pictures 2/3

Explanatory text with the images of card types should wait until their use is being explained in the game-play section.

Setup 8/10

Seems obvious that the deck is placed face-down, but it should still say so. Should state that the deck is comprised of the Button and Directional cards before I've shuffled the Stage cards in there, too. Stage Activation rule should be in the Bashing section. OK - I see it's there, but it should be highlighted, as it's an important special rule. Rather than noting it at the end of the section, it should be right after the drawing of the card - if it's a 7, do this extra step, then choose & discard. as it is, I'm wondering what "finish the Bash phase" means, since I've already chosen and discarded.

Setup Pictures 5/7

Not needed.

Game Play 10/15

Turn Order - Bash: are there different numbers on the backs of the cards that I'm checking, or am I wrong in my assumption that the deck is face-down? Images of the cards showing front and back of a few (in the components or set-up section) would clarify this. OK - I see, it's in the diagram on the next page. Earlier would be better, or on the same page. Turn Order - End: what is my 'combo'? An earlier section explaining that on my turn I'll draw some cards and use some to form and resolve an action would clarify this. Burst Action - Attack: should explain earlier that each character has certain attacks they may make, each requiring a different combination ('combo') of button and direction cards. The Fight - Effect example should show the Opan Gi card with the referenced section pointed out. Check for KO: this is not quite clear. If the attacker KOs one of an opponent's characters, they discard the cards ('combo') used to do so, and then may use any remaining cards from their hand to attack that opponent's remaining character? Block Action: the Soviet Crusha bit of flavor should be in the example, not in the main rules. In Free For All mode, may the player whose turn it is attack any active target? The sequence of actions in the Free For All mode section should be more clear - first turn order, then Distractions/Full attention, THEN number of rounds.

Game Play Pictures 5/7

Not really needed, but a long combo sequence showing some unusual mixes would be good.

End Point 2/6

Time's up? After how many rounds?

Overall Comprehension 3/4

Clarity 3/3

Page 23: highest roll, not role.

Presentation 2/2

Good choice of text face - this would be impossible if it was all in the pixelated face used for titling.

Shop Presentation 13/20

Ad 3/3

Good image and concise distillation of play.

Backdrop 1/1

Logo 1/1

Action Shots 2/5

Should show more of the game, less of its players. Does not give any idea of the card art or structure/progress of the game. First video does a much better job of showing the cards, but I still can't see anything of the characters except their images.

Description 4/5

Turn based, not "turned based". Switch is used instead of Swap. This information: "each of the 12 unique characters has a personalized list of attacks to help you pummel your opponent into the ground… using cards!" is THE key note that should lead the rules, video, and shop page intros, and Game Play section.

Video 2/5

Promo video is okay; a bit long for an ad. Game play video jumps right into a mid-game mechanic, without telling me anything about the game, its theme, or its basic actions. This should start closer to the two-minute mark, with character selection, not Stages & Bashing, about which we know nothing. Narration over blank background is not good - some character cards should be shown already laid out while first player choice is mentioned. It would be helpful to mention a basis for choosing a character - they have these powers, which more or less complement each other. Cards looming back & forth from the camera are distracting; a central over-the-table shot would be better, with cards sliding in and out of the frame. It would help if I could see the character powers somewhere well enough to read. It is better to lay out cards, then shoot a brief still, then pause while changing the layout, rather than fiddling with cards while the tape rolls.
