Sanity Test for Viking Feast

71/100
Final Score
Raucous card game about drinking with easy to understand rules.
Completed September 29, 2023 by Chris Aylott

Rules 63/80

Structure 9/9

Follows the expected structure and covers everything that needs to be known.

Requirements 3/3

Requirements are present and match the shop. You may want to think about that 12+ rating in the context of the drinking variant. It's unlikely ever to matter, but if the rest of the game is 12+ then you may want to stress that the drinking variant is for adults only.

Introduction 2/3

Solid introduction. It's not specifically evocative of a time and place, but does connect the gameplay to the fantasy.

Overview 2/3

Objective is clearly defined. You could probably end with "last one standing."

Component List 4/5

Components are clearly listed and numbered.

Component Pictures 2/3

Component pictures are incorporated into the setup pictures that follow.

Setup 8/10

Setup is simple and easy to followed. Just to tied up some loose ends, though -- is the feasting deck face-up or face down? Also, I had to look up Chwazi, so it might be a good idea to either explain that or to tell the players to pick someone at random instead.

Setup Pictures 5/7

Introduces the card information at an appropriate moment, and otherwise unnecessary.

Game Play 10/15

Game play rules are summarized and clearly detailed. You might want to adjust the layout to make it clear that step 1 (play or discard) is a choice of two different actions. I'm not sure you need a "this round" in the discard rule, either. Is the intent to discard, draw, and then continue the steps as normal?
-- You should define the conditions for passing out, and probably give this check its own step 4 before going on to the hand refill step.

Game Play Pictures 5/7

No game play pictures needed. Some visual examples might be helpful but the cards seem self-explanatory.

End Point 5/6

The game ending rule could be a little more explicit -- for instance, "The game ends the moment there is only one player who has not passed out. That player wins." The references to "in the same round" suggest there are elements of timing that as far as I can tell don't actually apply.

Overall Comprehension 3/4

Not sure I'd completely understand the rules if I had been drinking myself, but otherwise no problems.

Clarity 3/3

The wording could be a little more direct and precise in places. But overall this is clear and easy to read.

Presentation 2/2

Simple presentation but it's clean and easy to follow, with plenty of white space.

Shop Presentation 8/20

Ad 1/3

Ad image is fun, but the Viking in the barrel is too small and overwhelmed by the text. These elements could probably be arranged in a more compelling way. The summary and bullet points are fun, but you might want to find a way to back up the strategic surprises claim in the description.

Backdrop 1/1

I like the background, though it doesn't seem to match up with the art style of the cards.

Logo 0/1

Does not blend well with the background. The Viking in the barrel takes precedence over the text here -- in a good way, I think -- the image and text are still too small in proportion to the background.

Action Shots 2/5

People enjoying the game is always nice to see. The game situation shots seem scattered and random, though, and the cards look a little lost on the table. Try staging some shots with a neutral background that show off the cards and situations.

Description 4/5

Solid description that makes the game sound appealing. You might want to expand a bit if there are any combos that can show off trickery or tactical play, but what's here sounds like a fun experience.
