Battle Ace is an easy to learn, chess-like strategy game where you move, stack and attack with your cards to wipe out the enemy, take their king or invade their stronghold. The card warriors and zombies have different combat values and movement rates and can be stacked (with limits) to become a more powerful fighting force. The pace is kept quick with alternate, one-action turns and you are engaged the whole time working out your strategy and trying to assess your opponent’s next move. There are a number of optional rules available which add in some more randomness, terrain features and new warriors etc (all using a deck of normal playing cards). An extra one or two players can enter the fray by simply adding a second suit of the same colour to each side and expanding the battleground (two decks will be needed for this).
You can play Battle Ace right now with just a pack of normal playing cards to create the warriors and battleground as the rules are freely available (think Regicide!). The pack on offer here boasts high quality, UV protected linen cards with custom artwork by UK star mini-maker, Martin Buck (https://www.facebook.com/minimartinworld). The primary armies (hearts and spades) feature final ink drawings of Anglo-Saxon warriors, zombies and necromancers, all in Martin’s trademark, character-driven style. The characters’ armour, weapons, prowess and even functioning limbs increase in line with their combat value. The secondary suits (diamonds and clubs) are used for marking out the battleground or increasing player count and show the genesis of each image with the initial draft pencil drawing. (This may change in future editions as funds become available for new faction artwork e.g. Picts and Vikings.)
With multiple ways to win, random set-up, fast game play, campaign and optional rules, every game is different.
Why not download the rules for FREE and try out the game with a normal pack of cards? If you like it, maybe invest in this bespoke pack for your aesthetic and tactile pleasure!
(N.B. Boards/mats shown are in development and not available for now.)
Future Plans New factions, battle-mats and more. Battle Ace is also a great introduction to the core mechanics and strategy of my forthcoming custom card game, Battle.
