Important Dates in Canada Flag History
- 1867: The need for a distinctive Canadian flag emerges shortly after the Canadian Confederation.
- 1870: The Canadian Red Ensign begins to be used unofficially on land and sea.
- 1892: The British admiralty approves the use of the Canadian Red Ensign.
- 1921: The composite shield on the flag is replaced by the recently-granted Canadian Coat of Arms.
- 1945: A joint committee of the Senate and House of Commons is appointed to recommend a national flag to officially adopt, but their recommendation is not adopted.
- 1963: The government decides to adopt an official Canadian flag through Parliamentary debate, giving rise to the Great Flag Debate of 1964.
- 1964: The two houses of Parliament approve a resolution recommending the new design.
- 1965: A proclamation is signed by Queen Elizabeth II, Lester Pearson and Guy Favreau, and the new national flag is inaugurated on February 15th.
- 2023: The Canada Flag Meeple is born.
