In Cards of Olympus, players take on the roles of one of the Olympian gods. Players use a single 16-card deck of cards to recruit heroes, mortals and other gods to their side in a battle for power. Cards are double sided with each side being divided into two. On one side, the card is a mortal and hero. On the other side, a god and a monster.
Each turn, four new cards are placed face up in the middle of the table. The half nearest the player, plus the player's personal god card form the player's hand.
At the start of the turn, the cards will generate Tribute (or victory points) which can be spent to:
Some quests and blessings will also reward the player Drachmas. You can spend drachmas on your turn to convert a Hero into a God.
At the end of each hand, the four central cards are discarded (their orientation remaining the same) and four new cards drawn from the common draw pile. When the draw pile runs out, the discard pile is shuffled and the game continues.
Play continues until a player earns enough victory points (10) to claim the throne of Olympus.
In Cards of Olympus, players are optimizing a common deck. Players are competing to best optimize their portion of the deck by getting heroes and gods (or perhaps heroes and monsters) that best fit their strategy.
Each twist and flip of a card affects the player and their opponent.
