A great battle rages..... And the tale will be told in the sky!
Carrion Call Pocket Edition is all the excitment of Carrion Call, in an easy to carry size. Carrion Call is a light deck building game that tells the tale of a battle between two opposing armies. The battle rages on the ground, illustrated by Carrion Call’s card play. As casualties mount the crows and vultures begin to appear in the sky above, which acts as Carrion Call’s score tracking mechanism. You must balance the damage you lay upon your opponent against managing your own casualties to keep the Flock away from your front. Over four rounds you will use a unique card matching mechanism, and powerful bonus cards to try and overpower your opponent. After four rounds the player with the least number of points over their front is the winner!
Set up
Divide the cards into the blue deck (blue outline on the face), the orange deck (orange outline on the face of the card), and the bonus deck (red outline on the face of the card). Shuffle the three decks. You will take either the blue or orange deck and give the other to your opponent. Place the bonus deck face down on the play area.
Place the board between you and your opponent with a short edge facing you and your opponent.
Place the flock tokens near the board.
Game play
You will start with a deck of 10 cards identical to your opponent's. You and your opponent both draw a random flock token to determine who plays first, higher number wins.
On your turn you will play up to 3 cards from your hand. You may play more than one card if you can make a combo from matching cards. To match cards look at the shape and number of bird silhouettes on the long edge of the card. If you have a match, you may play those cards together.
The cards come in two types. Offensive cards have black silhouettes in the top area of the card. Defensive cards have gray silhouettes in the top area. Offensive cards will allow you to place matching tokens from the flock into the flight path heading away from you (see arrows on the board). Defensive cards will allow you to move matching flock tokens from above your front into the flight path heading away from you (again, see the arrows on the board). The tokens must match the bird, or groups of birds, pictured on the card. You may not add tokens together to get the number of birds.
Take turns playing cards from your hand and moving or placing tokens, until one player has drawn their last card. This signals the end of the round. Each player get to play one more card, then the round is over.
Count up all the points from tokens over your front. Crows are face value (1, 2, or 3 points) and vultures are 5. The player with the least amount of points will draw cards from the bonus deck.
If you have the lowest total points, draw 3 cards and look at them. Bonus cards have either gray, red, or a combination of both on the face. The gray function the same as the defensive cards, move those matching tokens from over your front into the flight path. The red birds allow you to move the matching tokens from over your front over to your opponents front, skipping the flight path. Choose one of the cards to add to your deck for the next round, and pass the other two to your opponent. They choose one of the two remaining cards, and discard the third face down. You are now ready to play the next round.
Play continues for a total of 4 rounds, adding a bonus card to your deck after rounds 1, 2, and 3. At the end of the fourth round tokens are counted again and the player with the lowest total is the winner.
