In Collapse, cards are played onto a face-up discard pile called the Stack. Cards in the Stack are laid out in a row so all of them can be seen.
Cards have color (green or purple), shape (circle, square, or triangle), and number (1, 2, 3, or 4). You can play on the Stack if your card matches two of these three attributes. For example, if the top card of the Stack is a Purple Square 1 you could match color and number by playing a Purple Circle 1.
There are also Wild cards where the color and shape are set, but the number is whatever you want it to be.
Along with playing on top of the Stack, you can also play in the middle of the Stack by matching cards on both sides. For example, say there is a Green Circle 1 and a Green Circle 2 next to each other in the middle of the Stack. You could play a Green Circle of any number between these cards, matching both color and shape. You would then take all 3 cards (the 2 that were already in the Stack and the 1 you played between them) and put them in your point pile. The rest of the Stack moves down to close the gap. This is called a Collapse. If you use a Wild card to cause a Collapse, you get to steal a card from each other player’s point pile.
If you ever empty your hand, you get to take the top 3 cards of the Stack and put them in your point pile.
Play until the deck is empty, then the person with the most points wins.
Can you outplay your opponents?
The Collapse deck can also be used to play a game called Speed. The object of the game is simple: be the first player to get rid of all your cards.
The catch: there are no turns in Speed. Everyone is going whenever they can, as fast as they can.
Oh, the lovely chaos.
The rules that come with the Collapse deck teach you to play both Collapse and Speed. But the Collapse deck can be used to play other games as well. If you look in the Downloads section you will see a link for Other Games With the Collapse Deck. These additional rules are not printed with the game, but you can download them for free to learn even more games to play with the Collapse deck.
We believe that artwork is great, and makes a game pretty. But ultimately whether you love a game or hate it will be based on how fun it is to play.
Games are about sitting down with friends and family--and possibly Uncle Ned (watch him; he cheats)--and having fun.
And so Art-Free Games was born. Our goal is to make enjoyable games that prove you don't need art to have fun.
In the end, it's all about the game.
