Description

Conjure is a party game about word associations. Players will attempt to conjure up the same item based on a category and a set of conjuration spell words.

How well you do depends on how in synch you are with your fellow players.

At the start of the game

Give each player a Conjuration Board, Summoning Board, dry erase marker, and four Summoning Crystals. There are eight of each type of board in eight different colors.

Then, shuffle the category cards and deal one card face up for each player to the center of the table. Set the rest of the cards aside.

The Game

The game is played over a series of rounds. There is one round per player.

Start of a Round

Over the course of the game, each player will be the conjurer. The conjurer chooses a category of something to summon. At the start of a round, the conjurer will pick from one of the available category cards. Each category card has a "category" and a point value: ⭐, ⭐⭐, or ⭐⭐⭐.

The higher the ⭐, the more points during the scoring phase, but the harder the category.

Conjuration phase

After selecting a category, starting with the conjurer, each player will write a NOUN onto their Conjuration Board using the dry erase marker.

These nouns are called spell words.

There is no specific restriction to what the spell words are. However, you should carefully consider the spell words you write hoping to find some synergy or association with the conjurer's (or another player's) word.

Everyone's spell words should be visible.

Summoning phase

After everyone has written the conjuration word, the conjurer then uses up to four of their Summoning Crystals and places one by each of at least two spell words. The conjurer does not need to select their own spell word.

In this case, the conjurer selected the spell words FREIGHTER, HYDROGEN and ROCKET.

Summoning

Based on the selected spell words, all the players may simultaneously and secretly write their summoning word on their Summoning Board. Everyone's summoning word will be revealed simulataneously.

The summoning word is the "thing" that the players think is being summoned based on the marked spell words and the category. The rules for the summoning word are below.

The objective of this phase is that some (but not all) of the players summon the same thing as the conjurer. The conjurer's summon should be associated with the selected spell words.

Summoning Word Rules:

Players must follow these summoning rules. Words that don't follow these rules are ignored and the player loses 3 points.

  • The summoning word must be a noun. It can be a proper noun.
  • The summoned thing cannot be or contain any of the written words. For example, “Dog” and “Fish” cannot summon “Dogfish”.
  • The summoned thing must always be a thing without any adjectives or describing words. It’s just a “sunflower” not a “yellow sunflower.”
  • Each player’s summoned thing must follow the category. For example, a player cannot guess “Spaghetti” in the “Animal” category.

The reveal and scoring

After everyone has written their summoning word, everyone reveals their summoning board.

NO MATCHES: If no one has matching Summoning Words, the conjuration fails.

MATCHES, BUT NOT WITH THE SUMMONER If at least two players match eachother, but no one matches the conjurer, the matching players score 2 points per ⭐ per player who matched.

EVERYONE MATCHES If everyone guessed the same Summoning Words, everyone except the conjurer scores 1 point.

SOME, BUT NOT ALL MATCHES In all other cases (i.e., some, but not all guess the conjurer's summoning word), players score points for:

  • The conjurer gets 1 point per player per ⭐ who guesses the conjurer's summoning word.
  • All players who correctly guess the conjurer's summoning word also get 1 point per ⭐.
  • All players who received a summoning crystal scores 1 point
  • If two or more players summon the same thing (but different than the conjurer), they score 2 points.

End of the Round

At the end of the round, the conjurer takes category card. That category is not available for the remainder of the game.

The game ends when all of the players have been the conjurer and the categories are all used.

Custom categories

The backs of all the Category cards are blank so that you can create your own custom categories. THey include point values, so think about how difficult the categories are going to be.

Alternative rules: Dark Magic

You can also play Conjure using the dark magic alternative rule set:

  • At the start of the round, the conjurer picks a category and immediately and secretly writes down the summoning word on their summoning board.

  • Then, each other player writes down a spell word based on the category. Unlike the regular rules, the players use the spell words in both a hope that their word is associated with the summon word and dissassociated with the word. That is, when the conjurer selects spell words, not being selected is also helpful information.

  • The conjurer then uses the summoning crystals to mark all spell words that are associated with their summoning word.

  • After the spell words are marked, all the other players write the summoning word (following the standard rules) onto their summoning board.

  • The summoning words are all revealed at the same time.

  • Follow the same scoring fules.
