Deep below the earth, a rare-metal mining operation is halted when an unknown infectious fungus is found. Federal powers take control, their unregulated experiments quicky getting out of hand. The now-defunct government blacksite has fallen victim to an outbreak, and a breach of the facility is an imminent threat.
Take control of a rag-tag group of mercenaries tasked with descending to the facility and recovering research data, the only hope to form a cure. To keep the entire event under wraps, the mercenaries are given minimal information regarding the layout of their area of operation and the hazards within- so it's a blind jump into darkness. But with smart moves, adaptive planning, and a good use of the provided gear, there may be a chance to see daylight once again.
Slayer Games Studio proudly presents its third project-
EXFIL- Co-op Hazard Recon
The gameplay is a cross between action, survival, and exploration elements which come together to create a unique dungeon crawler-style game with a retro-future comic book aesthetic and tactical focus.
THE SETTING
The game's titular mine turned government blacksite presents itself as a deck of tiles that are laid down as the area is explored, uncovering new rooms and creating unique challenges for players when it comes time to handle the wide range of hazards- from cave-ins, to derranged infected enemies, and many other tests of skill and cooperative play. Do note- as the game's objectives are collected and the facility is explored, new enemies, events and hazards are shuffled into the main deck, so while careful and measured play is key to survival, so is timeliness and planning.
THE TEAM
Each player controls a Mercenary, kitted out with a choice combonation of tightly crafted weapons and gear that have defining values such as damage modifiers, resource usage, and special abilities. The only limitation to what a Mercenary can carry is decided by the category of item, being allowed a Primary weapon, Secondary weapon, and Gadget. This allows for experimentation in both kit building and playstyle- but the most important element at play is teamwork, using your gear and resources in conjunction with other players is key to mitigating risk and overcoming deadly hazards.
THE GEAR
The kit that players will be able to combine and use include a unique range of gear, from the action game standard shotgun to surveying drones that can be sent ahead down unsure paths. All three types of kit use one of two resource types- ammo and tech- which depeding on the player's choices during setup dictate how they'll be spending and collecting them. When it comes to combat, the system is designed around equal parts smart decision making and resource use with crucial attacks coming down to a dice roll, with a high roll being decided by simple but versitile modifier rules. Some weapons may be better on specific enemy types, or at specific ranges, or might just be enough to take out a deadly target without running a player's ammo supply dry. It's up to the team to set up for the best possible outcome with smart item usage and positioning.
THE BIOHAZARDS
EXFIL has a cast of Biohazards- mutated zombies who each bring their own unique challenges to play, from erratic movement, different resistances to weapons, and unique attack types. Basic infected miners and engineers might take less hits to take them down, but may have a lunge attack that activates at the end of their turn. Security guards are beefier, and can perform both ranged and melee attacks with unique effects. These are two of the 8 enemy types players will come across on their mission, and keep in mind, some of the stronger and more complicated ones show up incramentally as the game goes on.
EXTRA INFO
EXFIL has been in serious development for almost 2 years now, the oldest design from 2017 being dug up in all its cardboard and hot-glue glory to be turned into what you see today. With lore, combat, and gameplay concepts inspired by the classic Resident Evil games and a love for cooperative experiences, I've pulled no punches in attempting a design that's both fun, intense, and relatively easy to get into. I fully endorse house rules, alternate gamemodes, and challenge runs as this project is as much of a set-in-stone board game as it is a system for good old survival-horror. I hope you enjoy my biggest project yet, and share it with friends and family for a unique experience on your next game night!
