Spin, Write, Film, Edit!
This Game was made as a tool to inspire and spark Story Writing Creativity. It was designed to be flexible in its use so that you could use it with a group or by yourself as story idea generator. Use all of the SPINS or Choose the SPINS you want to use as you practice coming up with story ideas to write.
I love Action-Adventure and Science Fiction, and I tend to only write stories in those genres. But I realized I needed to expand my story writing skills and move beyond my comfort zone to do it. I made this game for myself at first because I thought it would be cool, fun, and useful. Then the question hit me..... "I wonder if others would enjoy this also?"
There are more genres and sub-genres for movies, T.V., and books out there, but I chose to only list the most popular Genres on the wheel. If you know what genre you want to do - then skip that SPIN and continue on. Most sub-genres are a mixture of the main genres, so mix it up and have fun writing!
SPIN for a random subject. This can be THE subject of your story, or a subject included in your story. I chose subjects that are pretty universal to mankind no matter where you live. The subject of "TIME" for instance could be anything; Time travel, passage of time, time on a clock, effects of time, or a character in your story who is constantly asking what TIME it is, etc. The idea is that you use your creative flow and imagination to include "TIME" in your story somehow.
This gets into character development. What does your main character want? What is his/her motivation? Randomly selecting the main character's goal, want, or desire will push you to stretch your story writing muscles!
Usually you choose a character flaw for your protagonist that causes him/her the most resistance to reaching their outward goal. But you can SPIN to randomly choose one and see what happens in the story you write. You never know what combinations will spark the next great story idea or film.
A PROP is a physical object of interest, or of non-interest. Use your creative imagination as to how you will include this random prop. It could help tell the story, be part of the story, or just be in the background. It's on the game because it challenges you to include something required that you wouldn't normally choose for yourself...... Improvise!
Once again this challenges you to be creative. SPIN to select one of two decks: The "Random Dialogue Deck" has eighteen random lines of dialogue; choose one card from the top of the deck and include that line of dialogue in your story somehow. The "My Dialogue Lines deck" is eighteen cards that are BLANK on the back so that you can can write on them your own random dialogue lines that you think are cool. This makes it fun as you get to personalize your own game.
There are several organized Film Challenges and Writing Challenges on the internet that you can join. Each one has different rules to their particular challenge. You can also start your own group to work with and start your own local "Challenge" just for fun and practice, or simply "Challenge" yourself to write stories with a deadline.
If you are a team of filmmakers, you could; A. SPIN as a group and each person then goes off to write a story based on the random group selection. Then as a group compare stories, vote as a group on who's story to use to make a short film. B. As a group, have each person SPIN their own random selections. Then each person goes off to write a completely different genre story. When done, return as a group and review stories. Then vote as a group on which story you want to make a short film of. Or C. SPIN as a group and write as a group together bouncing creative ideas off each other as you develop your story - then go film it!
Have fun writing your story! And Remember, if it was easy - everyone would be story writers!
One Game Box with Lid, One 10 inch x 10 inch Game Board, One Spinner (arrow & base), One Deck of 18 cards "Random Dialogue Lines". One Deck of 18 cards "My Dialogue Lines" which are blank so that you can write your own favorite lines on the face.
Note: This is a story idea generator. It won't write a story for you.
For best spinning results; Be sure to attach the spinner to the board with double-back tape. This will keep the spinner from moving out of place when spun. (Double-back tape not provided with game). Or You can use a hot-glue gun and just glue it to the center of the wheel.
