Freeze Frame is a legacy card game that can be played alongside your game night favorites. Come up with zany actions people need to perform or offer up some out of the box bonuses to enhance your primary game.
For the first game, remove all the cards with text on them that looks like handwriting and shuffle them together. Shuffle the rest of the deck and place the written on set on top. For every game after, shuffle all the cards and deal out 3 to every player. Place the remaining card pile somewhere on the playing surface.
Most of the cards in Freeze Frame are blank aside from a number and the word “Minnesotas” at the bottom. If you have a non-blank card, the text will tell you what you need to do to complete the card.
You will have three cards, most of them blank to start. You may use a writing utensil to fill out a blank card at any time with either a game-changing effect or an act that you’d need to do to succeed. Black permanent marker works best, but the cards will handle dry-erase if you feel like you need the ability to have a reset. Feel free to get creative, but try to come up with ideas that don’t break the games you are playing this alongside or are impossible to attain.
Find or create a card that isn’t blank, then to complete it, you need to do what it says. There are no turns in Freeze Frame. When you think you want to attempt a card, shout “Freeze Frame”. At this time, hand the card to the person to your right and they will count up to the number of Minnesotas listed on the bottom. (e.g. 4 Minnesotas = 1 Min-ne-so-ta, 2 Min-ne-so-ta,…). If you complete the task before they finish counting you complete it and add it to your pile, if not, it goes to the discard; either way, draw a new card from the pile.
If anybody moves between when you say “Freeze Frame” and when you complete the card or time runs out, whichever comes first, then that person needs to discard a card and doesn’t get to draw a new one.
The game ends when only one person has cards left, the draw pile runs out (don’t reshuffle) or a predetermined time agreed to by the group has passed (likely end of a game or game night).
Have the most completed cards at the end of the game or be the last person with a card remaining.
