Hnefatafl (ne-fə-ta-f(ə)l), also known as King's Table or Viking Chess, is a Scandinavian strategy game played on an 11 x 11 checkered board.
Hnefatafl was popular in Northern Europe between the 8th and 11th century AD. By the 12th century, chess had mostly replaced it; however Hnefatafl's rules were recorded, and in the early 19th century they were discovered and translated.
The defending team plays with thirteen pieces, with the objective of moving their King off the board before the attacking team captures it. The attacking team plays with twenty-four pieces; their goal is to capture the King before the defender gets it off the board.
Note 1. To make it cheaper for you, the game does not include a box. Customers are recommended to purchase a Small Parts Bag ($0.80) from The Game Crafter. This will easily fit all the game pieces besides the board.
Note 2. If you would like a box and don't mind spending a little extra, you may purchase the Boxed Edition instead.
