Hope of the Stranded is a solo mint tin adventure. Take it anywhere to be transported to a deep space struggle for survival.
After barely escaping from the epic battle through waves of enemies and making it through to the jump point you thought would take you home...
Your ship emerges from the jump lost in the stars and drained of fuel. Ahead a derelict hangs in space, just outside the pull of a gas giant and only just in range of the power you have left.
You suit up, grab a few supplies and board the derelict. You pump in as much O2 as you think you can spare, but then; if you don't find the fuel rods you need to power your ship all hope is lost anyway. The abandoned craft creaks and moans around you, as you step through the dim blue tinged gloom of emergency lights that blink and flash into life around you. The air won't last, but it seems the ship will not last long either.
CLANG! The airlock door closes behind you as you consider which way to turn...
CLANG! Another sound rings through the hull of the ship...
CLANG! The same note reverberates through the walls and floor. That was not you. You are not alone...
Hope of the Stranded is an exploration of a derelict craft, as you look and hope to find three fuel rods and return to your ship before:
The O2 runs out,
The derelict falls apart around you, or
The alien stalking the ship (and hunting you) catches you.
Each turn, choose a new direction to explore, reveal the card and roll a dice to determine its orientation. By moving through the ship you reveal the map of it, but some directions are blocked by walls or locked doors.
Each turn, the alien moves too; often towards you. As the O2 levels in the ship drop the alien moves more swiftly.
Balance your actions against the draining resources and the speed of the threat you face. Tread carefully to avoid the ship falling apart around you.
Second edition update notes This is the second edition, with some minor updates in the rulebook layout and a correction to some typos.
The main update is the addition of room numbers on the back of the room cards: Each room card now features a '1', '2', or '3' to dictate how they are laid out in set-up (in columns of 1, 1, 2, 3, and 3). This is described and pictured in the updated rulebook.
...This change makes the game less likely to be completed in a very small number of turns due to pure luck, but does therefore make it average harder. You are free to ignore those room numbers and layout fully randomly as with the first edition.
