HORSEMAN’S CHESS is a chess variant in which a piece’s movement capabilities can change during play. The primary actors are the familiar chess pieces (Pawn, Rook, Knight, Bishop, Queen, and King) with their traditional movement capabilities except that none of them can move more than two spaces nor jump spaces without assistance.
Pieces augment their movement by using mounts. The Charger mount allows a piece to move an unlimited number of spaces, while the Jumper mount allows a piece to jump over an intermediate space when moving two spaces.
For most pieces, the change in movement with or without a mount is straightforward, though the effects upon the Pawn and Knight may not be obvious.
The print-and-play rulebook includes the basic rules, full movement details for each piece (dismounted, riding a Jumper, and riding a Charger), cut-out tokens for mounts (8 Jumpers and 8 Chargers per side), rules for two variants of HORSEMAN'S CHESS, and instructions for recording games in algebraic notation if desired.
HORSEMAN'S CHESS requires a standard chess set and the included cut-out tokens. Black and white tokens are in the rulebook. The Additional Colors file includes tokens in brown (or dark wood), red, orange, tan (or light wood), yellow (or gold), green, blue, indigo, purple, and gray (or silver).
Other versions of HORSEMAN'S CHESS available on The Game Crafter include Horseman's Chess Deluxe and Horseman's Chess.
