Description
In Kula, each player represents an island chief. Your goal is to acquire the resources you need to maintain your people while taking place in the Kula Ring, a complex trade market among the Trobriand Islands.
Rules: 1. Each player gets an island card 2. Players get 3 additional cards per round. 3. The goal is to acquire all of the resources shown on your island card. 4. On their turn, the player must trade, moving a number of cards, face down to their left and/or right. 5. Each prestige is worth one card. 6. Necklaces must only be traded clockwise. 7. Bracelets must only be traded counterclockwise. 8. All trades must be reciprocated. 9. If trade recipient does not have an equivalent amount of prestige items to trade in return, they must meet the trade value with resource cards (pigs, yams, and axes) 10. A player may choose to “cheat” by not using any number of prestige cards during a trade. This means you may “horde” prestige cards. 11. The first player to meet their island’s resource goal, wins!
“…the Kula exchange has always to be gift, followed by counter-gift; it can never be a barter, a direct exchange with assessment of equivalents and with haggling. There must be always in the Kula two transactions, distinct in name, in nature and in time.” - Bronislaw Malinowski, 1932
