Do you want to sow conspiracy or stop it in its tracks? Lizards and Lies is a 2v2 (or 1v1) battler that lets you play with the push and pull of conspiracy theory moving through social media. Play as one of four characters and use unique abilities and cards to influence the network. Platform Moderators and Educators face off against Edgelords and Conspiracy theorists in this asymmetrical board brawler. Will you convince the world that lizards are taking over, that birds are surveilling society, or will you shut down these lies?
Lizards and Lies is a board game designed to model and create discussion about the spread of conspiracy theories on social media networks. Players take the role of either a Spreader (Conspiracy theorists and Edgelords) or a Stopper (Content Moderators and Digital Literacy Educators) with the goal of spreading ridiculous theories or trying to stop them from gaining ground. Through play, participants will see how conspiracy interacts with a national election to grow, engage with algorithms, and spread lies. Players take the role of characters in a social media network to create chaos or stop it from happening in and forth team based play.
The game has been used with highschool and university students and has been introduced to non-profits, government agencies, and journalists. A research question turned game, Lizards and Lies brings together complexity and fun in this disinformation battle.
As an educational endeavour, all costs of the game go into its manufacturing and distribution.
