Master of Coin: Rules Overview
Game Overview: "Master of Coin" is a strategic board game for 2 to 4 players, blending the classic elements of chess with resource management and strategic conquest. Players assume control of one of four factions (White, Black, Orange, or Red), striving to dominate the board by mining gold, building structures, and producing chess pieces. Victory is achieved by trapping your opponent’s king in checkmate.
Components and standard rules:
• Game Board: 4 player checkered board. Can be played on a variety of boards (example 12 x 12 grid)
• Gold Mines: 8 total (can be played with more or less). Each gold mine is worth 200 gold
• Gold Coins: 100 coins, each worth 10 gold. Players begin with 4 gold coins (40 gold)
• Pieces:
Units per faction: 8 Pawns, 2 Knights, 2 Bishops, 2 Rooks, 2 Queens, and 1 King (buy an extra set for each faction to get a better experience!)
Buildings (towers):
• This game comes with 30 towers (you begin with 1 tower stacked with your King on top. This designates your Castle, and from this you can produce Kings and Pawns. Place King on top of a tower. A King may leave the tower anytime). Only that initial starting castle may be used to produce pawns or another King (if you have extra sets), until you build more castles.
Remaining towers (buildings designated by the piece the building produces placed on top)
• Townhall (a tower designated by a Pawn on top, place Pawn units on adjacent squares),
• Stable (a tower designated by a Knight on top, produces Knights, place Knight units on adjacent squares),
• Basilica (a tower designated by a Bishop on top, produces Bishops, place Bishops on adjacent squares),
• Brickyard (a tower designated by a Rook on top, produces Rooks, place Rooks on adjacent squares),
• Citadel (a tower designated by a Queen on top to produce Queens).
Setup:
Players can place their initial tower and King anywhere they want within the 3x8 sections of the board.
Game Mechanics: Each turn, players may choose ONLY ONE of the following actions:
Move a Piece: Move one of your chess pieces according to its traditional movement pattern (with specific adjustments for this game, Pawns can move forward and sideways wither two squares or one square each time, with standard attack diagonally).
Mine Gold: Collect 10 gold for each pawn adjacent or bedside a gold mine.
Spend Gold: Build towers AND/OR produce units by spending your accumulated gold.
Unit & Building Details:
• Pawns (Cost: 20 gold): Produced by the Castle or a Townhall; move 1 or 2 squares forward or sideways; attack diagonally.
• Knights (Cost: 30 gold): Produced by the Stable; move like traditional knights, jumping over pieces, mines, and buildings.
• Bishops (Cost: 30 gold): Produced by the Basilica; move diagonally.
• Rooks (Cost: 50 gold): Produced by the Brickyard; move horizontally and vertically.
• Queens (Cost: 80 gold): Produced by the Citadel; move in any direction.
• King (Cost: 100 gold): Represents the ruler but follows standard movement rules.
• Buildings:
Castle (Cost: 100 gold): Central to your strategy, enabling gold collection and producing Kings. Without a Castle, gold is unable to be collected. A Castle can be designated by 2 stacked towers.
Townhall (Cost: 40 gold): Produces Pawns.
Stable (Cost: 30 gold): Produces Knights.
Basilica (Cost: 30 gold): Produces Bishops.
Brickyard (Cost: 50 gold): Produces Rooks.
Citadel (Cost: 80 gold): Produces Queens
Movement Rules:
• Pieces move according to traditional chess rules with the following exceptions:
Pawns: Move 1 or 2 squares each turn forward or sideways, attacks diagonally by 1 square. Can not attack backwards.
Knights: Can jump over other pieces, gold mines, and buildings.
Other Pieces: Cannot move through gold mines or buildings.
Special Rules:
Building & Production Limits: Multiple buildings can be purchased and constructed per turn. Likewise, multiple units can be produced per turn.
Single Action Per Turn: Players may only perform one action (move, mine, or spend) per turn.
Castle Destruction: If a player’s Castle is destroyed, they can no longer collect gold.
However, they can rebuild the Castle if they have accumulated enough gold.
Winning the Game: The game ends when a player is in checkmate (Their King is threatened and trapped). The last player with their King remaining is declared the "Master of Coin."
Additional Notes:
• Gold Management: Players must track the gold available in each mine. When a mine is depleted, it is removed from the board, leaving the square open.
• Capture buildings: Players may choose to either destroy buildings or capture them and use their function.
