In Night Flight, players explore the night sky as bats, foraging for insects and avoiding predators between sunset and sunrise.
Players choose a bat and take their corresponding Field Guide. The Field Guide identifies the insects and roosts their bat prefers.
Choose an Environment Card and its Moon Token to get started. Based on the Environment Card and the number of players, set up the Night Sky with the correct number of tiles. Roosts are placed on the corners of the Night Sky. Bats are placed on their roosts and the Moon Token always starts at 6PM on the Environment Card.
Environment Cards have different styles of game play and Night Sky effects. Depending on the hour, you might add tiles or subtract tiles.
During their turn, a player has 5 Actions to choose from in any order and combination:
Echolocate - sneak a peek at what’s ahead (flip over tiles in a straight line - one action per flip)
Fly - explore the night sky (move one tile per action)
Feeding Buzz - catch your preferred insect snack (when you land on a revealed insect, add it to your field guide for points - 2 actions)
Rest & Digest - take a rest while you digest your insects (land on a roost, save your insects, and skip your next turn)
Use your Echolocation to reveal insects. Each insect on a tile is worth a certain value. Use a Feeding Buzz to choose an insect on that tile to eat, remove the tile from the Night Sky, and add it your Field Guide.
You may encounter Predators lurking in the dark. Predator encounters are resolved by flipping the Fight or Flight Token. Fight means you lose your undigested insects; Flight means you escape with your insects. Either way, the Predator will move and find a new hunting location in the Night Sky.
Depending on their roost, bats can fly through certain obstacles. Otherwise, they have to fly around an obstacle.
After all players have taken their turns, advance the Moon Token to the next hour. If the Night Sky expands (+) or contracts (-), complete those effects before the first player takes their next turn.
The game ends when the Moon Token on the Environment Card reaches 6AM and the last player has completed their turn.
Players add up their insect points for their score. The player with the most points wins and can rest easy knowing they have a full tummy.
In Solo Play, the game plays in the same way, but Predators move after an encounter in a different way. Solo Players try to collect the most insect points and get the high score.
