Description

Planets Unbound

Planets Unbound is an area control, collectible planet game where you atempt to control the planets on behalf of the stars. Build structures to show your followers the true power of the divine stars. Cherish the endless variety of life on the planets. Discover lost secrets and ancient relics. You learn the ways of the nomads as you venture to the edges of the solar system.

Your solar system is yours to craft and the universe is your sandbox. Currently accomodates two players but will be expanded to include more players.

How to play:

In the box are 8 planet cards, 28 deck cards, 48 disciple tokens, one rulebook and one felt bag. Each player picks 3 planet cards and places them in front of them on the table. This is called a Solar System. Each player recieves 12 disciples. The extra disciples are backup / replacement pieces.

Each player takes turns moving their disciples attempting to gain control of all of the planets. When a player controls all of the planets or when a player cannot draw a card at the beginning of their turn the game ends. The player with the most planets wins the game.

Drawing cards from your deck and playing them allows you to change the game and alter the movement of your disciples. Create a strategy around a custom deck and test it against your friends!

How is this different from other popular TCGs?

I am heavily inspired by Magic the Gathering. I have such fond memories of playing. It was the first card game I ever got really invested in. It felt so magical and the mechanics often mimicked the theme of the card. It had a sort of fantasy / dreamlike quality at one point during it's history. But, as many are aware, there were some problems with magic that could often get frustrating.

Rarity: One thing I am trying to address with this game is when you open a booster pack in most modern TCGs (Trading Card Games) the large majority of the pack is often seen as useless by most players. Everyone knows we are all after the rare cards. In Planets Unbound I want the majority of the cards to be useful through their own merit rather than the difficulty of finding the cards. I believe that this will favor ease of access for new players and will allow for better gameplay and metas to develop. Instead of traditional rarity the game will include "alter" rarity and legendary rarity. This means that a card will be signified as rare by its unique border / artwork. The only traditional type of card rarity included in the game is "Legendary" (a rare card that many players may never see due to its extreme rarity.) This will allow some cards to be highly sought after while still allowing room for the "common" cards to shine.

Deck Limits In many TCGs several copies of cards are allowed in your deck. This is partially to allow some control of the random forces of your deck. Often however you'll find that you MUST purchase more than one copy of an expensive card for your deck to be viable and competitive. In Planets Unbound your deck is limited to one copy of each card. This keeps the price of assembling your perfect deck cheaper and allows the game to prioritize mechanics while also making it easier to balance the game (in my opinion.)

Energy Block How many times have you had THE BEST hand but drew no lands. No energy. No creatures. Too much of one thing. Well you can still get too much of one thing in this game however, the goal is to develop the game so that all cards have power and most cards can be played for free. This meant that I had to get creative with the mechanics of the game but I think I have found the happy medium. Let me know about your exerience with feeling like you can't play a card. This is something I am constantly trying to perfect.
