What kind of game is this?

Questbound is a thematic 1-2 player game with euro-like resource management aspects paired with an adventure RPG of survival.

Each player takes on the role of a small town professional who is looking to make change in their world. Keeping track of your supplies, herbs, and lanterns, while garnering reputation with those that populate the dying world, you will adventure as far as you can and see how much fame you gather along the way.

The Story

"The world is all but done for. A plague unlike anything else ravages everyone and everything. Monsters wander closer and closer to the once peaceful villages. Heroes are nowhere to be found. You may not be of legend, but who else will make a change?"

Questbound tells the story of a dying world, conquered by plague and the monsters it creates. You've seen the toll it has taken on the earth, the town, the people. You have suffered, those you love have suffered, and you want that suffering to end. Or, at least subside a little. Picking up your pack, you set across the blighted landscape, facing enemies and encountering obstacles along the way.

Will you become a story of Legend? Or will you simply go quiet into the good night?

How It Plays

Traverse System

Alt text

The main system that drives your interaction with the world. The four cardinal directions show which ways you can travel, but once you start on a path you must follow it until the end. Each run that you start will be completely different from another.

Resource Management

Alt text

Rather than a typical RPG where players are worried about keeping their health above 0, Questbound is a resource manager. Carefully balancing 4 resources, Supplies, Herbs, Lanterns, and Reputation, as well as space management in your travel cart, your goal is to never run out of Supplies while on your path. If you do, your game will end short! Utilize Character abilities, buying and selling items, completing quests, and so much more to keep your travels going.

Combat System

Alt text

To be thematic with a resource management, our combat system is also a balance of your resources. You will always start with 2 Action Dice, used to 'attack' enemies, with the ability to gain more through equipment, buildings, modifiers, and purchasing temporary ones with supplies. Before revealing any monster, you may spend a Lantern to gain 1 temporary Action Die. But as soon as you flip the enemy, while you can still purchase additional Action Dice with Lanterns AND Supplies, but it is determined at a specific ratio unique to each enemy. Some are cheap, some are expensive. Make sure you go into combat with enough supplies or you may end your run early, again!

Playable Characters

- The Plague Cleric

1.png

You have fought this plague tooth and nail every day since your apprenticeship. It claimed your master, your childhood friend, and even a lover or two. You have tried everything you could to keep the death at bay with your herbs and knowledge, but sitting her in your hamlet isn't enough to right the wrong it has caused.

- Crypt Paladin

3.png

The nightshift used to be easy. Late nights, but peace and quiet for the entirety. That was until the monsters went from a trickle to a constant stream. They used to never make it past the village walls, but now they find their way through and threaten the lives of all in town. Maybe if there were less monsters in the world, they would stop finding their way here... maybe...

- Fungal Explorer

2.png

You've been in the world for some time. You've seen it change slowly, drastically, and not for the better. You've seen the mountains lower, the rivers dry, the dead rise. You've known the earth was not well since the day the plague began, but there's not much you can do. Except watch. And watch you will.

- Death Knight

4.png

You can't remember the last time you took off your helmet. The bone having become one with your flesh some time ago. Not often does your red gaze soften, but when it does it only serves as a reminder why it went red in the first place. Dead, all around you. Some you put there, some you didn't. You know your reasoning is honorable, even if the acts you commit are not. Your gaze reddens once more.

Events

Throughout the game, you will come across obstacles, missions, or boons. These will either help you or hinder you, but you never know what will happen in the wilderness of the forest.

Enemies

Monsters, beasts, denizens. The world is filled with dangerous things, and sometimes you have to cut them down to keep moving. Utilizing a simple dice mechanic where you must meet a threshold, the true test of combat is in your management of your resources in that battle and beyond it.

Traverse

Travel and exploration are at the heart of Questbound. Make your way across an everchanging forest, going in circles whilst seeking out your goal. You will see many beautiful places, much destruction, and countless horrors.

The game has a beautiful aesthetic and a unique traversal system, which is what drew me to the game in the first place. Sadly, the rules fail to address a lot of the basics and complexities of the gam...
