Inspired by the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain (pronounced Sow-in), players will collect resources and gather villagers for feasting. Acquiring the correct arrangement of guests will score victory points but care must be taken to have a place at your table for each. Guests that are turned away will incite the anger of the Aos Si who must be placated with offerings as the moon nears it apex!
Samhain is a competitive board game for 2 to 4 players that plays in 60 minutes.
The game is played over three Rounds. In each round players will take turns in clockwise order either placing or taking meeples from the game board.
When you place meeples, you cover resources icons located in one of four sections on the board. When you do, you acquire that resource.
To take meeples from the board, you must pay all of the uncovered resource icons within a section to take back into your home the meeples within that section. When you do so you may check if the combination of meeples you now own matches any of the Moon cards to score points. In this way, all players will collectively modify the game state and in doing so try to secure the right combination of meeples for themselves while denying a scoring sequence for their opponents.
When you take meeples, you also will get a chance to acquire tiles from the section you took from. Tiles provide a means to create a more efficient resource engine.
Home tiles provide a specific space in your home for a color of meeple and when a meeple is placed, they generate bonus resources.
Harvest tiles are placed on the board and incentivize players to play certain color meeples onto specific locations to gain bonus resource for themselves and the owner.
Ancestor tiles are power pure engine building tiles but they take away a seat from your home.
The Aos Si
The Aos Si are a collection of nature spirits and fairies that stalk the night of Samhain looking for offerings. Failure to appease the Aos Si can have significant draw backs.
At the end of each round players are given the option of making resource offerings to the Aos Si. Failure to provide the right set of offerings will see a players standing decline while those who provide the right sacrifices will see extra flexibility and victory points in later turns.
