Description

Shamash Rules (Mint Tin - Artwork Not Final) Designed by: Brian Fiore and Justin Steinberg Players: 2 Players Play Time: 10 Minutes Mechanisms: Drafting, Secret Objectives, Action Selection, Hidden Information, Memory

OVERVIEW:

Shamash is a 10 Minute 2 Player game symbolizing the Chanukah, the Miracle of Lights, through the lighting of the Menorah. Set Up is easy, with 11 Candle Cards Shuffled and placed face down in a line. Then 3 cards are placed on top of the end cards and the middle card (which represent the Handles and the Shamash).

Shamash is played over 8 Rounds, divided into two phases: (1) Candle Drafting and (2) Candle Lighting.

During the drafting phase, players alternate taking 1 of 3 actions (Peeking, Flipping, or Swapping Candles) AND always taking 1 Candle Card.

During the Lighting Phase, players alternate playing Candle Cards face-up (which may contain 0-3 Lit Candles on their face) in an attempt to ultimately place a Candle Card resulting in 8 Lit Candles.

The game ends when 8 or More Candles have been Lit, or when each player has played all of their Candle Cards.

Victory Points determine the winner. The Player ending the game gets the blue Shamash Points. Each player gets their own red Lit VPs for cards they played, black hand VPs for cards still in hand, and gray Handle VP if they were able to fulfil the secret objective on the Candle Card under their Handle.

COMPONENTS:

Cards: 18 Cards Total 1x Shamash Card: 2x Handle Cards:
11x Candle Cards: -----1's: x5 -----2's: x3 -----3's: x1 -----0's: x2 4x Rule Cards

SET UP: -1- Shuffle Candle Cards -2- Deal x11 Candle Cards in a Line Face-Down -3- Place Shamash Overlay Card on Center Candle Card. Place the x2 Handle Cards over the end Candle Cards.

DRAFTING PHASE (4 Rounds): Determine 1st Player (randomly) for Drafting Phase. Then each Round, Players will alternate taking 1 Turn each where they will (in any order): (a) Select 1 Action (Flip, Peek, or Swap) AND (b) Take 1 Candle Card (not covered by a Handle or Shamash Card).

Actions:

  • Flip: Player may Flip Over any 2 Candle Cards on the board (including those under Handles/Shamash)
  • Peek: Player may privately peek at any 1 Candle Card on the board (including those under Handles/Shamash)
  • Swap: Player may either: (a) exchange 1 Candle Card from their Hand with any Candle Card on the Table (except the one under opponent’s Handle Card) face-up or down, OR (b) exchange any 2 Candle Cards on the Table with one another (excluding the one under the opponent’s Handle Card) without flipping the cards.

PLAYING PHASE: Over Rounds 5-8, Players will alternate each taking 1 Turn per Round where they will play 1 card from their hand to the Table until the game Ends. Players will only play their cards to their respective side of the Shamash to keep track of their cards for scoring at the end of the game.

END OF GAME:

  • (1) The 8th Card is Played, or
  • (2) 8 or more Lit Candles are showing.

SCORING VICTORY POINTS (VPs): Players get VP a number of ways:

  • Playing the 8th Lit Candle or 8+ lit candles gains you the Shamash VPs (blue).
  • Playing each Lit Candle is worth some Lit VP (red).
  • Cards in Hand are worth Hand VP (black).
  • Handle Cards act as Secret Objectives awarding VP for meeting specific conditions.
