Backstory

Standing on the main level of the cargo ship back to America, only 6 hours out from shore, you start to think about your family waiting for you at home. Your wife and 3 kids, all waiting by the door to greet you as you make it back from your long, unwanted trip from the US to Japan and back. You start to think back to when you got laid off from your day job because of overstaffing and can’t believe after a couple years of just trying to provide for your family, you are still working on this damn cargo ship.

Realizing, mid-thought, that you haven’t eaten in 5 hours, you start to head to your room to grab a bite. On your way there you look to the East and see dark clouds beginning to form. Seeing these storms has become a normal occurrence after being on these ships for the past two years. In preparation for the annoying motions of the boat, you go to grab the turkey sandwich you made this morning for lunch along with some Dramamine. As you are sitting there eating, still thinking about your wife and kids at home, you start to hear some rainfall and the boat starts to sway side to side like it does every other day at sea.

About 20 minutes into the storm, you begin to notice that the ship is starting to sway what seems to be an excessive amount. You step outside your room, and as you do, lightning strikes the front corner of the ship. You turn to run to the captain and about 30 feet to your right, directly after an earth-shattering clap of thunder, another bolt hits one of the large wooden boxes in the center of the ship. The box begins to go up in flames. The flames grew so fast not even a team of firefighters would have a chance at putting it out.

The captain runs out and yells, “Prepare the…” You didn’t get to hear the rest because a bolt of lightning hit the barrel next to him and blew into thousands of pieces. You run up the stairs to check on him, but on arrival see an unrecognizable face.

You run into the cockpit, desperate to find a solution, and see the fire had spread within three feet of the windows. As you sprint back outside, you hear the windows of the cockpit shatter. Glass lands near your shoes.

Still slightly in shock, you figure that your only way out of this catastrophe was to abandon the ship. You run to the back of the boat, which wasn’t on fire, slipped on a life vest, and see the axe that you use to help open crates whenever you get to your destination. You grabbed the axe, slip it in your belt loop, and as you are about to jump off the boat, you look back at the middle of the ship just as it started to collapse from the heat of the fire. You prepare to jump, and as you are mid-jump, you see, what seemed to be in slow motion, a lightning bolt come down from the sky, and hit the cockpit. All the electronics inside burst and sent a shockwave outward. The shockwave hit you, and that’s the last thing you remember before waking up on this forest filled island.
