Small in stature but spirits bold
A clash of which fanciful tales will be told
A harsh word or a heated exchange
Now tables topple and chairs rearrange
Who triggered the tumult is anyone’s guess
In spite of the chaos, there’s no real distress
Where root beer flows and gnomes collide
Friendships are forged, when the ruckus subsides
Tavern Tumult: Print-and-Play Edition is a DIY version of our hilariously fun 4-player fighting game, Tavern Tumult! The game is set in a whimsical tavern full of rowdy, tough-as-nails, root beer swilling, gnomes. Weather the barrage of tiny fists, dish out some damage of your own, and don't forget to raise a frothy mug and toast to friendly carnage!
There's lots of different ways to build a print-and-play game. We recommend checking out some tutorials on YouTube to help you decide which method you prefer. If you like the way our copy looks (in the Action Shots below), here's a brief description of how we did it:
We printed the front and back pages of the game board on 24lb standard, 8.5x11, copy paper. the trimmed a little bit off the edges with a cheap paper cutter, then we used a spray adhesive to attach the pages to each side of a piece of 80pt chipboard. Finally, we cut lengths of electrical tape and applied them to each edge of the board, folding the excess over the edge, to create the black boarder.
We printed the Card front and backs on 65lb cardstock (10 pages in total), cut out the cards on the paper cutter, glued the front and backs together with the spray adhesive, and then clipped the corners with a 4mm corner cutter.
We printed the playing pieces on label paper, cut them out with scissors, attached the round pieces to half inch plexiglass discs, and attached the rectangular pieces to small pieces of 80pt chipboard. We then colored in the chipboard edges on the rectangular pieces and touched up any white paper edges on the round stickers with black marker.
We printed the rule sheet on cotton resume paper and then trimmed the white margins with the paper cutter and colored the white edges with black marker.
In addition to everything listed above, you'll need one D6 die.
It's easy! First you select one of the four gnome character cards (along with the matching player piece and health indicator). Your character card has a health bar along one side. Place the indicator at the top of your health bar and the gnome on your starting square.
The goal of the game is to be the last gnome standing. You accomplish this by moving around the baord, drawing/playing action cards, and finding root beer (health boosts). If you run out of health points at any time during the game, you have been eliminated. Remove your gnome from the board and decide which one of the remaining players you're going to root for.
Action Cards are drawn at the beginning of your turn, played throughout your turn, and discarded at the end of your turn. Action Cards may allow you to execute attacks, force you to move your gnome in various ways, or offer health boosts.
There are six floor tiles, scattered around the tavern, that are marked with dice values. At the beginning of the game the die is rolled two times and the two root beer pieces are placed on the tiles matching those dice rolls.
Each time that a root beer is collected, the die is rolled and the root beer piece is placed on a new tile.
The die is used for two purposes in Tavern Tumult:
The die is not used to determine movement spaces for your turn. Players can move their gnomes a set number of spaces each turn (unless modified by the lingering effects of an Action Card played against them during the current round).
Start your turn by rolling the die and drawing Action Cards based on the number you rolled. This will be your hand for the turn. Proceed by moving your gnome and playing Action cards in any order you wish (unless otherwise specified). At the end of your turn, discard any remaining cards.
The video shows the standard edition of the game, but gameplay is the same for the Print-and-Play edition.
