My oldest children are ages 9,8 and 7 right now. I wanted a game that checked several boxes at once.
1) Strategy game. Because I like them and I'm the kind of parent who makes his kids like what I like.
2) Wargame. Something like Axis and Allies, but without kids getting upset when that lone infantry takes out your six tanks.
3) Cooperative. See #2. This helps everyone have fun at this age.
4) Simple. The Phoombians Attack! uses very simply movement and combat rules and my kids have no difficulty playing it.
5) Fun for adults too! I've played this game with my gamer friends and we had fun. It is possible to be selfish, and there is not necessarily a "right" move like so many co-op games. I like TCID, but, well, there it is.
I'll be honest, I'm not a great game designer. But continuing in honesty, this game is a lot of fun. I've yet to have even a boring play test. It gets intense quickly and the tension stays until it's over.
