Description

Perhaps your society will be the centre of culture in the galaxy? Or amass vast wealth? Maybe you will claim large amounts of territory and dominate the galaxy with weapons and ships? Or perhaps you will advance your technology beyond the reach of all others? There are many paths to victory in Universal Endeavour.

How to play UE (the basics)

Aim

Make your society the most influential on galactic history by being the first to gain victory points equal to the number of players.

Territory

The areas on the map where you can build and gather resources is determined by your territory. In Universal Endeavour a player's territory can be shared with other players. You claim territory using your citizens:

  • A map hex is considered your territory if one of your citizens is on a ground area in that hex.
  • A ground area is considered your territory if it contains one of your citizens or if it is empty and in a hex that is your territory.

If a hex or ground area is also the territory of another player then this is also shared territory.

If a hex is your territory and it contains no units from another player, except for civilian ships, then you are considered to dominate the hex.

Phases

Universal Endeavour (UE) is played in turns and each turn has 4 phases:

  1. Collection phase – In this phase all players will collect resources.
  2. Coordinate – In this phase, all players will choose in which order they play their command cards this turn. Command cards allow you to manage different areas of your society. There are 4 commands you can issue Construct, Manoeuvre, Influence and Research.
  3. Command phase – In this phase, players take it in turns to reveal their next command card and perform the actions that card allows them to perform.
  4. Consequence phase – calculate the effect of influence, check victory conditions and tidy up the board for the next turn.

Command phase

The command phase is where most of the game play happens so lets look at it in more detail.

During the command phase you will play your command cards. These let you manage different areas of your society. You have 4 command cards, Construct, Manoeuvre, Influence and Research:

  • Construction: allows you use prosperity to buy units and buildings, repair units and buy research or cultural influence.
  • Manoeuvre: allows you to move units, establish transport links and initiate battles.
  • Influence: allows you to increase the influence of your culture on the galaxy.
  • Research: allows you to use your technology cards and science study tokens.

Victory

A Player wins when they reach a number of victory points equal to the number of players in the game. This happens immediately, do not wait till the end of the turn.

The main ways of earnings victory points are determined by the victory cards chosen during setup. You will have "number of players plus 1" victory cards in play. Here are some examples:
