Victory Stars is a remix of Goita, a game that originated during the Edo period of Japan.
A simple rules game that originally started as a form of gambling, it's widespread play stopped when gambling in Japan was banned.
A tiny area of Japan, the Noto Peninsula, kept the game alive by playing out at sea. It has now been declared as a regular game and not gambling and is making a resurgance in Japan.
Victory Stars by default is a 6 player game, but fully compatible with the 4-player mode that inspired it.
Gameplay is simple: 1. Deal the cards according to the number of players and the person across from you is your partner. 2. The first player will put a card face down and one face up. 3. If the next player can match the card, they put down the matching card face up and another face up card for thee next player to try and match. 4. First player to put down all their cards wins the hand and points for their team, and a new hand is started with the winner going first. 5. First team to score 150 points wins the game.
NOTE: There are other ways to score points for your team which are detailed in the instructions. There's even a condition for an automatic Game Victory for you and your partner.
You can also see Goita as featured in the animated series, After School Dice Club.
