Interesting Facts about the Jolly Roger

• The first recorded use of a skull-and-crossbones symbol on naval flags dates back to the 17th century.
• The skull-and-crossbones flag was flown to identify a pirate ship preceding and during an attack. Pirates would often fly a false flag--or no flag at all--until they had their prey within striking distance.
• Its first appearance as a pirate flag dates to the 1710's, used by such pirate captains as Black Sam Bellamy, Edward England and John Taylor. It was the most commonly used pirate flag during the 1720's.
• The term "Jolly Roger" may have originated with Bartholomew Roberts, who is said to have called his flag by this name in 1721. His flag, however, was not a skull-and-crossbones, and it is believed that other pirates used the same term generically for black pirate flags.
• Only two authentic Jolly Roger flags exist in the world today.
• In 2023, the Jolly Roger Meeple was born.
